Against Their Will: Our Duty to Respond to Fellow Polytheists in Distress

I really have nothing to add to this conversation in the reblog. I feel like it’s a very important conversation to be having, though.

11140123_10153135382268705_6716534346276535975_nAs I am watching people crawl out of the woodworks, voicing their support for a theology of consent in the Polytheist community, a question has come up.

“This is all well and good, but how do we make the gods participate?”

For those of us, who, like me, certainly couldn’t just will a harmful manifestation of deity away with positive-thinking and pixie-dust, what is the actual path forward?

It’s hard to say for sure. While there are a sizable number of people with experiences similar to mine, where a deity was simply intent on grinding the mortal in question into the dirt until they relented, there is precious little, right now, being said about how to compassionately respond to the suffering of people going through something like this. There is even less being said about how to make it stop.I can’t answer this question all by myself, but I have…

Life Update #1

For those of you patiently (or, hey, impatiently is cool too; I understand) waiting for oracle answers from me, they will be in your mailbox by tomorrow at 3pm central at the very latest.  I threw out my back at the beginning of the month, and then the storms coming through the Midwest left me with an almost daily migraine (which the post-migraine symptoms are the worst).

For those waiting to see your entries for the Agnon for Apollon put up, that should also be coming this week!

For those waiting for replies to email, I hope to see those done tomorrow as well.

For those of you waiting for a blog post with some content to it…  I’ll get to that as well asap.

Care to Join Me for a Woo Experiment?

This idea keeps popping into my head and is getting the nod from a certain Fellow in my life, so I’m kindly requesting that if you have inclination to do this, please do so…

For visionaries, travelers, seers, and any other spiritworker that I’m simply blanking out on right now, I am curious about a name/word/sound that continues to show up in my life.  So I even more curious what will happen if others focus on the name/word/sound.

The word is “Owello.”

I promise to explain more sometime in the near future if my theory is correct, but I’m not wanting to influence anyone right now.  If you’re up to joining me in this experiment, I’d appreciate you emailing me what you discovered and experienced at notawiccan(at)gmail(dot)com.  Images you got or anything else, if anything at all, is highly welcomed.

Hymn IV to Hekate

I’ve been reading a lot of beautiful hymns and prayers lately, and this one is no different!

Hymn IV to Hekate

You are not the stars
But the wind between the stars, One
Lonely Infinite

Ghosts of alien sentient things
Follow you, nothing bars You where
You wish to tread, my alien Lady
Lonely

Nothing can possess You for how can
The thimble contain the ocean
An ocean of oceans of oceans
How could the toad grasp the hound

You are the heart of beauty
In every horror, the artless beauty
Between proton and proton
The howling chaos of quark and quark

You are the nameless flower in the core
Of torments of fires and thus
Our Savior and Redeemer
Salvatrix, Soteira
One and Lone

Encountering Outside Powers

This is absolutely perfectly put.

EmberVoices's avatarEmberVoices: Listening for the Vanir

I had a great conversation recently with a former student of mine. We were talking about the challenges of balancing human ethics with spirit etiquette. How do we avoid cultural appropriation when a Power from a culture to which we have no other connection decides to drop in and say “Hi” for whatever reason?

Novice spirit workers who have only public blogs from other spirit workers, devotional polytheists, and reconstructionist pagans to work from can come away with an impression that it’s just not supposed to happen in the first place. As if we’re each only ever talking to the specific Powers we have some kind of cultural permission to serve, and that anything else is Against The Rules somehow, and you can either accept those rules or reject them outright and face dire consequences. But in my experience both in private conversations with other spirit workers, and in my…

June 2015 Oracle Call

Edit: I have filled my maximum for this month. Should you be interested, I do offer this service for pay and will be makin my next call July 4th.

At Apollon’s request, I will be offering oracle on the 7th of each month in His honor.

I currently do not use any oracle tools nor do I channel. I simply interpret what I get told. So if you’re looking for someone who uses something more concrete, that is understandable, and I will happily make suggestions on others to go to should you decide you are in need. I reserve the right to use another form of oracle in the future should I be led to it, and in that case I will be sure to let you know what I’ve drawn in the event you wish to interpret it yourself.

I will be taking up to 5 readings during these sessions.

I do ask that you consider a free-will donation in trade for this service should you have an oracle done by me, to be given after. This year I will be using donations to help meet my student loan payments, which by the end of the year will allow me to go back to college in hopes of serving our community.  All donations beyond the cost of my payments (which is very low monthly) will be spread out in our community to help others with medical bills.

However, He has made it known to me that He will accept digital copies of art and original prayers, released in creative commons for non-commercial, non-altered usage. All rights of ownership with remain with you, but I will be showcasing your work on this blog and would love to talk more about you as an artist and/or writer. This will be only for the 7th oracles that I offer this.

I will not be answering questions related directly to if Apollon is seeking you as a godspouse. I believe that He is more than capable of making this desire known, and I leave that in His hands.  However, if this comes up in my talk with Him, I promise not to leave it out of my message to you.

Finally, occasionally I get nothing as a response to the question. If that is the case, I will simply let you know with my apologies. This is one of the reasons why, in this case, I am asking for the trade of labor (art, prayers, money) afterward.

So with all of that said, if you would like an oracle done, please leave me a message here. I will leave you a message with my email address in it, so that you may contact directly with your question. I will do my best to answer your question by the end of the day on the 7th, but depending on my health and household it may take up to 48 hours beyond the 7th.

A Ludi Apollinares Competition!

A day late.  My apologies.

July 13th is the start of what were the Ludi Apollinares (Apollonian Games) in Ancient Rome.

This is the prize.  This can either be worn as a necklace or wrapped around the wrist; I’ve put one of my silver clasps on it.  The glass beads I’ve unfortunately lost note on of who made them, but I can say that I bought them directly from the artist who made them.  There are 11 herkimer diamonds.  The rest is quartz or garnet on hand-knotted silk.  The value of this necklace is somewhere around $200; I’ve not done the exact math.

So how can you win it?

These are the rules…

1. To enter, you must create an image, prayer, or poem in honor of Apollon.  You must be willing to release the rights into the Creative Commons, and I will feature it on this blog in the Virtual Apollonian Prayer Book category.

2. Send your entry to NotAWiccan (at) gmail (dot) com between May 26th and July 12th.

3. The winner will be chosen by Apollon via a name pull from a bowl on His shrine in my home on July 13th.  Sometime during the 13th I will announce the winner.

4. I will ship internationally, but if the shipping ends up being more than $15 I ask that you’re willing to pay the difference.

I look forward to seeing your entries!

Newly Listed This Week & an Upcoming Agon Prize!

It’s been a busy week of business-related stuff… Questioning if I want separate out my jewelry from my religious work and if so how to do so.  Yesterday came with a flash of clarity of what I’m really wanting to do with it, but now I’m stuck sitting with the question of if this high on my priority list of where I want my life to be.

I keep wanting to write about religious and spiritual happenings, but I’ve just not had it in me to do so this week.  Too much praying, meditation, and thinking, I suppose.  Here’s to next week being more wordy.

But for now I’m here to not only show off a couple items that have been listed in my Etsy shop, but give a sneak peek of a prize for an agon I’ll be running until the Ludi Apollinares (July 13th)…

A pair of quartz and antique button earrings by C. Laurentine

I really have to say these are some of my favorite earrings I’ve made.  I’m shamelessly nostalgic, and antique buttons are one of my magpie loves.  Here I’ve taken 2 of them and paired them with lovely crystal quartz briolettes on sterling silver.  These are not your typical beautiful earrings, but they have a certain industrial meets vintage loveliness that’s not always easily found.

Emerald on sterling silver earringsThis is another pair I’m thrilled over.  They’re understated and simple, I realize, but these are high-quality emerald resting on sterling silver.  Sometimes I love nothing more than being able to offer precious stones that can be worn for a number of situations from work to play at a reasonable price.  In this case, you these lovelies are a mere $30.

I’ve been trying to get a listing or 2 up every day, but I’ve not put what I’ve added all into this post today.  Please go and take a look at my Etsy shop when you feel like it.  You won’t be disappointed!

And now for the sneak peek!  I am very excited to get the full post for this up on Sunday with more pictures and rules.  I’m going to be offering a strand of hand-knotted prayer beads on silk.  The strand consists of 80 beads including a full set of artisan-made lampwork, herkimer diamonds, rock quartz, garnet, and sterling silver.  It has a focal piece of Tibetan quartz that I’ve wrapped in sterling as well.  It has a handmade clasp on it for those wishing to wear it as a necklace.  This strand of prayer beads has a rough estimate value of $200.

How can you enter into this contest?  Well, my friends, start plotting art and writing in honor of Apollon between now and July 12th, and keep an eye out for more info here on Sunday.
